The 10/40 Window
What is the 10/40 Window?
In the past 2000 years, only roughly 1/3 of the world's 6.5 billion people have been reached with the Gospel (click on 'What is Unreached'). Of those who are left, most live in a part of the world spanning from West Africa to East Asia, 10° to 40° North latitude. Lines are drawn to form a box or window around this area. Over 4.1 billion people and 62 nations live within the 10/40 Window. There are 1.2 billion people under the influence of Communism, 1.3 billion Muslims, nearly 1 billion Hindus, 350 million Buddhists, and 250 million Tribal Religionists. Eighty percent of the world's poorest people also live here, yet there is a greater tragedy. Only 8% of the world's missionaries are sent to countries within the window, and less than one penny out of every dollar we give goes to work within the Window.
What is the Unreached?
An unreached people group doesn't have any indigenous community of believing Christians with adequate numbers and resources to reach their own people. These are the people that have no churches, no Bibles in their language, no access to Christian radio, television, or books. Multiple people groups may co-exist within a political nation but because of language, land or social barriers never have any contact with one another. There are just under 7000 unreached people groups left in the world today - about 2.68 billion people.
